Downtown Salt Lake City bomb scare shuts down TRAX stations

A report of a suspicious package had much of downtown Salt Lake City cordoned off by police early Friday morning.

Salt Lake City police dispatchers said the 911 call came in at 3:15 a.m. after a security guard reported seeing a man leave a briefcase against a wall near the Radisson Hotel near 200 West and South Temple. Police, firefighters and bomb disposal experts responded, locking down the area.

The scene was cleared about 6:15 a.m. after the package was detonated. Subsequent examination determined the case had contained nothing harmful.

During the downtown lockdown, Utah Transit Authority was ordered to halt TRAX light rail traffic between the Courthouse and Salt Lake City TRAX-FrontRunner hub terminal.

Passengers had to either walk or utilize a limited "bus bridge" to proceed from outside the restricted area.
