Three killed in multivehicle crash near Moab

Three people were killed in a Friday crash involving four cars near Moab on State Road 191.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, a southbound Nissan Maxima tried to pass a semitrailer in a no passing zone and hit a Hyundai Azera that was headed north in the opposite lane. The Nissan began to spin out of control and was hit on its passenger side by a Cadillac DTS traveling in the northbound lane. It finally stopped in the middle of the road.

Two of the four people in the Nissan died. A 27-year-old woman who was ejected from the back seat was killed and a 54-year-old man in the passenger seat was killed on impact. A 10-year-old-girl also was ejected from the back seat and received minor injuries. The man who was driving the car also survived with minor injuries. The people in the Nissan were from Saginaw, Texas.

A 69-year-old man from Perry, Ga., who was in the front passenger seat of the Cadillac also was killed on impact. Two women in the car with him, one from Georgia and one from Oklahoma, received serious injuries.

A fourth car, a Toyota Camry that was traveling in the northbound lane, was damaged from flying debris, but the driver was not injured. The occupants of the Hyundai received minor injuries.

Those with minor injuries were taken to San Juan Hospital in Monticello and to Moab Regional Hospital. The women in the Cadillac were flown to St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo.

UHP said the crash was still under investigation, but alcohol or drugs did not appear to be a factor. The identities of the victims were not released.
