Outages dot the region as thunderstorms move in

Power outages dotted the Wasatch Front as thunderstorms moved through two counties on Saturday afternoon.

In Spanish Fork, lightning struck a power pole that caused a small fire and brief outages about 3 p.m. Spanish Fork police Officer Kurt Ballantyne said Canyon Road was briefly closed as firefighters worked to put out the fire.

A statement from Spanish Fork City said lightning struck near 3000 East and Canyon Road.

Spanish Fork's municipal power company shut down power from about 2550 East to the eastern city limits for about 30 minutes as fire crews put out the fire.

Farther north, another lightning-caused outage occurred in American Fork about the same time. Rocky Mountain Power spokesman Jeff Hymas said crews restored power to the area at 5:40 p.m. The outage affected about 1,771 customers.

Hymas said another outage occurred in Salt Lake City's west side, affecting approximately 2,732 customers in the Poplar Grove and Glendale neighborhoods.

The cause of the outage was unknown. Crews were working Saturday to have power restored there by 8 p.m., Hymas said.
