Matisyahu • If you haven't seen reggae-rapper Matisyahu for a while, you might be surprised by his clean-shaven face and wispy blond hair. It's a shocking change from his former look as a yarmulke-wearing, bespectacled man with a long dark beard. Matisyahu posted a beardless picture of himself on Twitter in December 2011. "No more Chassidic reggae superstar," he wrote on his website. "Sorry folks, all you get is me … no alias."

Jewel • The 39-year-old singer-songwriter — who was born in Payson, Utah — released her first greatest-hits album earlier this year. "It was neat to see the development over the years," said the yodeling soprano in a recent interview with The Tribune. Lucy Wainwright Roche opens.

Movies • The guys who made "Shaun of the Dead" — director/co-writer Edgar Wright, star/co-writer Simon Pegg and actor Nick Frost — are back for another run through genre fiction with "The World's End," a hilarious and sweet tale of former friends returning to their home town to re-create an epic pub crawl, only to find that their's something seriously amiss with the townspeople. Click here for a review, and also read an interview with Wright, Pegg and Frost. (Also read reviews of the week's other movies, including three movies from this year's Sundance Film Festival: the comedy "Austenland," the documentary "Blackfish" and the drama "The Spectacular Now.")

Television • It's time once again for the MTV Video Music Awards (Sunday, 7 p.m., MTV, MTV2 and Logo), which are utterly meaningless but always have some cool performances and generally have some sort of (usually manufactured) controversy. Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Justin Timberlake and Bruno Mars are scheduled to perform. And there's a rumor that 'N Sync will reunite.

When • Sunday at 7 p.m.

Channel • MTV, MTV2 and Logo

Local sports on TV • BYU hosts Cal State Fullerton in women's college soccer (Friday, 7 p.m., BYUtv); Real Salt Lake hosts the Columbus Crew in MLS play (Saturday, 7:30 p.m. Channel 30).
