Logan • A Logan man who pleaded guilty to starving his horses has been sentenced to community service.
A judge on Monday also ordered 57-year-old Darwin Layne Nielson to pay a $1,000 fine.
The Herald Journal reports the fine can be cut in half if Nielson can produce receipts showing he is caring for his horses.
First District Judge Kevin Allen also imposed a jail sentence, but most of it was suspended and Nielson was credited for time already served.
Nielson was arrested in January, and in July pleaded guilty to five counts of class B misdemeanor animal cruelty as part of a plea deal. He was originally charged with 25 counts of animal cruelty.
Nielson's attorney, Shannon Demler, said Nielson ran out of hay in the winter and wasn't able to provide more for about 30 horses he kept. Two of the horses later died.
