West Valley police offer online crime reporting tool

West Valley City police are taking some of their crime-reporting functions online.

Acting Police Chief Anita Schwemmer says the new Citizens Online Police Reporting System will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

"This new tool allows us to maximize our available resources while offering users the convenience of filing police reports themselves," she stated. "[This means] more officers will be on the streets and users will no longer have to wait to file reports on minor crimes."

The application is intended for "non-emergent crimes," such as theft, graffiti, lost property, theft from a vehicle, criminal mischief or vandalism and harassing phone calls.

Emergencies and major crimes — like violent assaults and robberies — should still be reported directly to the police department.

"The online reporting tool certainly makes it easier to report crimes," Schwemmer said, "but our officers are always available to respond to calls in person."

The Citizens Online Police Reporting system can be accessed by using your web browser to visit the site at www.wvc-ut.gov/reportacrime.
