A man found early Wednesday morning bleeding in a southeast Salt Lake City street from multiple knife wounds was expected to survive.

Public safety dispatchers said a 911 call came in at 5:18 a.m. reporting that a woman had been knocking on doors in the area of 1100 East and 1700 South, pleading for help. When one resident investigated, he saw the man lying in the nearby gutter, having suffered wounds to the arms and back.

The man, in his early 20s, was transported to the hospital in critical condition. His condition was later upgraded to serious, police said.

Investigators followed a trail of blood to a nearby alley where they believe the knifing occurred, a police spokesman said.

A suspect was not immediately identified.
