If the Clearfield Falcons are to right the ship and contend in the strenuous Region 6, they'll need to score.
They'll need to score a lot more.
The Falcons scored 92 points in 10 games a year ago in their first year under coach Will Hawes and were shut out three times in Region 6 outings. Clearfield's 3-7 campaign last season didn't go according to plan, but the Falcons have returners from last year who aim to contend against East, Highland, Bountiful and others vying for a region title in 2013.
Senior quarterback Tyler Mackelprang will lead the Falcon offense. He will be supported by a stable of running backs, including Kelly Thorpe, Andrew Sisk and Blake Wilcox, a transfer from Syracuse.
Defensively, Clearfield will be led by linebackers Hayden Phillips and Karson Elwell and defensive back Braiden Swaner. Senior offensive lineman and defensive end Dakota Wickel returns to anchor both lines.
The Falcons will test themselves in the preseason against 4A Roy, 4A Bonneville and 5A Layton before entering into region play Sept. 13 at home against Bountiful.
ASSIGNMENT • Region 6
LAST YEAR • 3-7 overall
NEED TO KNOW • The offense must find its footing for the Falcons to contend in Region 6. Clearfield totaled just 92 points and was shut out four times last season.
