College basketball • A former Xavier University basketball player is suing the school, alleging it damaged his reputation by expelling him for what he says was a false sexual assault accusation.

Dez Wells' federal lawsuit also names the private Catholic school's president as a defendant. A statement from Father Michael Graham says the university denies the allegations and will defend its decision.

Xavier expelled Wells a year ago after a woman accused him of sexual assault. A Hamilton County grand jury then decided against indicting him, and the prosecutor publicly questioned the school's expulsion.

Gymnast Douglas splits with coach

Gymnastics • Olympic all-around gymnastics champion Gabby Douglas has left coach Liang Chow's program in Iowa to join her family in California.

Missy Parton, whose family hosted Douglas during her training in West Des Moines, says the 17-year-old left Iowa earlier this week to reunite with her family. Douglas' mom and her older siblings recently relocated from Virginia Beach, Va., to California. Parton stressed Douglas and Chow remain on "good terms."

Celtics hire former forward McCarty

NBA • The Boston Celtics have filled out new coach Brad Stevens' staff.

The team says that former Celtics forward Walter McCarty will return as an assistant coach. Also joining the team are Ron Adams and Micah Shrewsberry.
