Health care worker charged with stealing from elderly patient

A home health care worker is accused of stealing nearly $2,000 from an 86-year-old patient in North Ogden.

In charges filed Wednesday, police wrote that the woman, 20, took care of the victim for two weeks in January. The patient discovered in February that more than $1,900 was missing from two credit union accounts, police wrote. The health care worker had access to the accounts for minor expenses, but the money was never given to or spent on the patient, police wrote.

Surveillance footage from the suspicious withdrawals during that time showed the health care worker at the ATMs.

Police interviewed the woman, who said she withdrew at most $500.

The woman was charged Wednesday with third-degree felony exploitation of a vulnerable adult and misdemeanor theft. In 2012, she pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor charges related to unlawfully using a financial transaction card.
