Power programs, new rules, concussions and the general popularity of high school football in Utah was brought into focus during Friday's Salt Lake Tribune TribTalk with moderator Jennifer Napier-Pearce.

Forty-nine high school games kick off Friday night and Napier-Pearce's panel guests who discussed how the season might unfold were Tribune reporters Chris Kamrani and Aaron Falk as well as assistant Tribune sports editor Kevin Morriss.

Topics also included the UHSAA's move to six football classifications as 3A split into two divisions.

"These schools wanted a chance to compete for a state championship," Kamrani said.

Another topic was the change in the pass interference rule, which no longer awards an automatic first down to the offense. It is now just a 15-yard penalty.

"It's kind of questionable how many coaches know the rule as been changed," Morriss said. "It may change the way defenses play third and really long plays....It will be interesting to see how [coaches] coach that."
