STEM education forum set Monday in Salt Lake City

Junior Achievement of Utah and digital publisher Discovery Education will hold a STEM Leadership, Learning & Networking Forum on Monday.

From 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at JA City, leaders will discuss the best strategies for teaching Utah students the skills they need to be ready for college and careers, focusing on STEM — science, technology, engineering and math. JA City is on the fourth floor, above the Discovery Gateway Children's Museum, at 444 West 100 South.

Speakers will include representatives from Prosperity 2020, Junior Achievement of Utah, and Discovery Education, which provides digital content to K-12 schools and is a division of Discovery Communications, an international nonfiction media company. Among them:

Mark Bouchard, emeritus chair of Prosperity 2020 and senior managing director of CBRE

Philip T. Cofield, president of Junior Achievement of Utah, and a board member of Prosperity 2020

McKell Withers, superintendent of the Salt Lake City School District

Kara Arnold, Miss Utah 2012, who promotes STEM education

Stan Lockhart, government affairs manager for IM Flash Technologies and a member of the STEM Action Center board

Charles Dershimer, a clinical assistant professor at the University of Michigan and director of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation's Woodrow Wilson Michigan Teaching Fellows Program

Junior Achievement of Utah educates students in work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy in K-12 classes; at JA City, a learning site for 5th and 8th graders, and at the JA City Career Exploration Center.

A "STEMulating Curiosity Day Camp" for students in grades 4 through 6 is being offered Saturday, but all slots are filled. A similar camp will be offered in October.
