Vintage Vince Young resurfaced for one entertaining series at Lambeau Field.

Running for first downs and extending plays, the seven-year NFL veteran looked Friday night as if was scrambling around again in a Texas Longhorns uniform.

He'll settle for the green-and-gold outfits of the Green Bay Packers. Young made a strong bid for the backup quarterback job behind Aaron Rodgers with an impressive outing in limited time during the 17-10 preseason loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

"As a quarterback, you want to lead your guys out there. You want to convert on third downs, you want to make first downs and know you're going to make the right throws and call the right plays," Young said. "I really feel like as a second- and third-team unit, I think we took a step forward, but we still have a lot to do to work."

Playing in the third quarter, Young finished 6 of 7 for 41 yards and a 1-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Amosa to tie the game at 10. He also ran for 39 yards on three carries, including a 21-yard scramble on a second-and-7 to the Green Bay 44.

Young's second series went three-and-out, but a high snap that led to a 15-yard loss was mainly to blame. Young seized the opportunity presented by coach Mike McCarthy, who was looking to sort out the three-way competition for the backup job between Young, Graham Harrell and B.J. Coleman. ESPN reported that the Packers released Harrell on Saturday.

Preseason highlights

Chiefs 26, Steelers 20 (OT) • Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger and Kansas City's Alex Smith fought to a first-half draw, and the Chiefs beat the Steelers in overtime. Roethlisberger was 13 of 19 for 166 yards and a touchdown. Smith struggled early but led Kansas City to a pair of scoring drives late in the first half and finished 17 of 24 for 158 yards and a touchdown.

Eagles 31, Jaguars 24 • In Jacksonville, Fla., Bryce Brown and Chris Polk ran for fourth-quarter touchdowns, and Philadelphia rallied to beat Jacksonville. Nick Foles, who lost the starting job to Michael Vick earlier in the week, completed 10 of 11 passes for 112 yards in the second half. Vick completed 15 of 23 passes for 184 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. He found Riley Cooper for a 9-yard score in the second quarter.

Jets 24, Giants 21 (OT) • In East Rutherford, N.J., Billy Cundiff kicked a 32-yard field goal with 8:04 left in overtime for the Jets. Rookie quarterback Geno Smith struggled, but Mark Sanchez seemingly hurt his right shoulder, and his status is suddenly in question two weeks before the Jets' season opener.

Redskins 30, Bills 7 • In Landover, Md., Washington's Rex Grossman threw for 171 yards, and Buffalo's Kevin Kolb left with concussion-like symptoms after getting kneed in the head in the Redskins' win. Grossman got the start for the Redskins (3-0) because Robert Griffin III hasn't been cleared for games following reconstructive knee surgery, and second-stringer Kirk Cousins has a sprained right foot. Kolb started for Buffalo (2-1) after first-round pick EJ Manuel hurt his left knee in the Bills' previous game. But Kolb's injury leaves undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel as Buffalo's only healthy quarterback. Tuel completed 10 of 17 passes for 63 yards.

Colts 27, Browns 6 • Andrew Luck threw two scoring passes, and Indianapolis' defense did not allow a touchdown for the second straight week as the Colts beat Cleveland.

Titans 27, Falcons 16 • In Nashville, Tenn., Jake Locker threw for 133 yards and a touchdown, and Tennessee sacked Matt Ryan five times as the Titans beat Atlanta.

Cowboys 27, Bengals 18 • In Arlington, Texas, Tony Romo threw two touchdown passes and Dallas' first-team offense finally got into the end zone in the win over Cincinnati. —
