A Saratoga Springs man died Monday, a day after a Jeep he was in rolled down a Utah County mountainside.

Trevor Nielson, 36, was hospitalized Sunday evening at the University Hospital intensive care unit in "extremely critical condition," said Utah County sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon. A news release indicates he suffered head injuries and never regained consciousness. He died at 11 a.m. Monday.

Nielson was one of three passengers in an older model Jeep Wrangler that the driver was taking uphill on Lake Mountain Communications Road, a steep service access road, which is frequently used by hunters and off road enthusiasts on the west side of Utah Lake on Lake Mountain.

About 5:39 p.m. Sunday, the driver failed to make the turn on a switchback and the Jeep, which has an exposed top, rolled about 50 feet down a rocky embankment and landed upside down. Nielson was flown to the Salt Lake City hospital. The driver and two other passengers were less seriously hurt.

Emergency responders smelled alcohol on the Jeep's occupants, Cannon said. Driver Dawn Grochowski, a 52-year-old Saratoga Springs woman, admitted she had been drinking, the release said.

After the driver was treated for scrapes and abrasions at American Fork Hospital, deputies arrested her under suspicion of DUI-injury accident, a class A misdemeanor. With Nielson dead, the charge could be enhanced.
