Salt Lake City's Hang Time does it for the fun of it

When The Future of The Ghost disbanded in late 2011, Salt Lake City's Will Sartain still wanted to create music."I was just ready to change things up," Sartain said. "FOTG felt so serious and I wanted something lighter and happier. Something I could come to practice and work on that made me happy and felt easy."So the guitarist. keyboardist and singer (owner of local venues Kilby Court and Urban Lounge) recruited drummer Cathy Fox, keyboardist Andrew Sato and bassist TJ Fitzgerald to create Hang Time, a pop band with a mission that defies the notion that an artist should suffer for art."I love to play fun music for the sake of fun," Sartain said. "That is what Hang Time is all about."Hang Time will perform at Urban Lounge on Saturday, Nov. 9 after a long hiatus. Sartain answered questions posed by The Tribune about the new band.When you are with Hang Time, whom do you pay homage to? Who are your inspirations?I really like a lot of modern bands like STRFKR, Miike Snow, and Chairlift. Our older inspirations would be David Bowie and 80's synth pop.When you are a spectator at a show, do you ever feel the need to dance?Of course! I love to dance at shows. How long have you known the other members of the band?I have played with Cathy for almost eight years with FOTG and Hang Time. Andrew and I have been close friends for about 10 years but only recently started playing music together. I met TJ about five years ago with a band called Giant.What are some of your most memorable musical experiences with Hang Time?Opening for Washed Out was really great. They are one of my favorite modern bands. How did [local musician and producer] Mike Sasich help with the album and make it what you wanted it to sound like?Mike is very easy to work with. He allowed us to make it how we wanted and then made subtle suggestions that really helped round out the songs. If you had a rider with requests, what would yours say?Water, beer, and a veggie tray.
