Bonneville running back Bryan Burns has gone viral

Bryan Burns may have the most popular 4-yard run of the high school football season.

As a junior running back at Bonneville High School, Burns' game and fame is gaining a viral following after a clip of Bonneville's Week 1 20-17 loss to Viewmont was posted late Tuesday night by Samer Kalaf of Deadspin.com. The Deadspin post identified the player as Viking Christian Young rather than a Laker, who actually turned out to be Burns.

But as Bonneville athletic director Mike Russell confirmed Wednesday morning, the player whose fame is expected to spike is indeed Burns, No. 40 in the Laker football program.

The video shows Burns receive the hand-off from the Bonneville 36-yard line.

What happened next is, well, you just have to watch it.

Once Burns tucks the ball in, Viewmont defensive lineman Hayden Bryson reaches out for the Bonneville running back and grabs nothing but his facemask. The momentum of Bryson's grab and Burns' running left resulted in Burns' helmet doing a full 180. Burns attempted to fix the sudden problem, the football tucked in his arms, but just kept on running.

"It was the wildest thing I've seen in a while," Russell said in an email. "Both Bonneville and Bryan are lucky that there wasn't an injury associated with this play."

Kept on running until Viewmont safety Chase Beckman smacked Burns with a hit hard enough to pop his suddenly-backward helmet right off. Burns reached down, picked up and helmet and had to stay off the field for one play, which is a mandatory rule when a player's helmet is dislodged during play.

"He came out for his 'one play' and was right back in and played the remainder of the game," Russell said.
