Toronto • Toronto FC has fired president and general manager Kevin Payne.

Tim Leiweke, president and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, says he and Payne agreed the team will move in a different direction in 2014.

Payne says he understood the team's desire to move forward, adding that he wants "nothing but the best for the club."

Payne, a former D.C. United executive, arrived in late November to turn around the worst team in Major League Soccer. But progress has been slow, with Toronto FC finishing 4-12-10 under coach Ryan Nelsen.
