An Ohio woman died Thursday after falling off a cliff near the Subway at Zion National Park.
Cheri Hass, 47, was leading a group of four in canyoneering through the Subway on Thursday afternoon when she took a wrong turn on the 2.5-mile approach hike, said Zion Park spokeswoman Aly Baltrus on Friday.
Hass slipped on some sand-covered slickrock and fell off a cliff, dropping more than 100 feet. She died on impact.
The woman's boyfriend, who was part of her canyoneering group, rappelled to the bottom of the cliff to find her before members of the group alerted park officials about 3 p.m.
The famous Subway is an area that penetrates the Left Fork of North Creek canyon and requires those who venture through it to climb down boulders, ledges and waterfalls and swim through pools and water.
This is the first death Zion National Park has had this year.
