Pac-12 football: No. 2 Oregon sprints past Virginia

Charlottesville, Va. • Marcus Mariota and No. 2 Oregon wasted no time showing Virginia all that speed the Ducks bring is more than just talk.

Mariota ran 71 yards for a touchdown on the Ducks' sixth play from scrimmage, turning a third-and-5 that had the crowd jacked up for a defensive stop into a demoralizing introduction into what Oregon football is all about.

"They came out in a man-free look and they all kind of ran with their guy and I just kind of hit it up the middle," Mariota said of the play, on which he flared five receivers out, then ran a draw. He was virtually untouched on the play.

"The guys did a good job blocking and the receivers did a good job blocking downfield," he said.

Mariota finished with 122 yards on four carries, and threw two touchdown passes. De'Anthony Thomas added three touchdown runs, and the Ducks piled up 557 yards of offense in their first trip to Charlottesville on the way to a 59-10 victory that looked frighteningly easy.

Still, it left first-year head coach Mark Helfrich with plenty to complain about, namely 11 penalties for 119 yards.

"Obviously we will clean that up," Helfrich said.

Virginia (1-1) came into the game riding a high after a comeback victory last week against BYU, the first since coach Mike London hired new offensive, defensive and special teams coordinators. Defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta's unit, especially, seemed confident it would be able to slow the Ducks down, but Mariota provided a very early look at what it was up against.

Colorado 38, Central Arkansas 24 • In Boulder, Colo., Paul Richardson topped 200 yards receiving for the second time in six days, and his second touchdown grab helped Colorado outlast FCS power Central Arkansas. Overcoming four turnovers, Connor Wood found Richardson all alone for a 30-yard touchdown that broke a 24-all tie with 9:16 left. It followed freshman Chidobe Awuzie's takeaway.

Richardson also had a 55-yard TD catch to start the scoring. He finished with 209 yards on 11 catches, which followed his 10-catch, 208-yard performance in Colorado's win over Colorado State in its opener. The Buffaloes (2-0) snapped a six-game losing streak at Folsom Field.

California 37, Portland St. 30 • In Berkeley, Calif., freshman quarterback Jared Goff passed for 485 yards and two touchdowns to give coach Sonny Dykes his first win at California. Goff completed 31 of 58 attempts and was 19 yards shy of breaking the school's single-game passing record. He became the first Cal quarterback since 1996 to throw for 400 yards or more in back-to-back games.

Oregon St. 33, Hawaii 14 • In Corvallis, Ore., Sean Mannion threw for 372 yards and four touchdowns and Oregon State rebounded from a stunning loss in its season opener with a victory over Hawaii. Brandin Cooks had seven catches for 92 yards and two scores for the Beavers (1-1), who fell 49-46 at home last week to lower-division Eastern Washington.
