Omaha • When the Salt Lake Bees open the Pacific Coast League championship series against Omaha on Tuesday night, they will do so without infielder Tommy Field.

Field was called up by the parent Los Angeles Angels after the Bees clinched their PCL divisional series with a 4-3 victory at Las Vegas on Saturday.

Field has been manager Keith Johnson's leadoff man throughout the postseason. In 81 games with Salt Lake this season, he hit .303 with 11 homers and 49 RBIs. In the fifth inning of the Bees' series-clinching win at Las Vegas, Field hit a go-ahead home run.

Asked about losing Field, Johnson was philosophical.

"We're trying, obviously, to do something special down here," Johnson said. "But our ultimate goal is always to get these guys to the major leagues. It will leave a little hole at the top of our lineup and at shortstop but, hey, next man up."

Before the Bees flew from Las Vegas to Omaha on Sunday night, no decision had been made about a possible replacement for Field on the Salt Lake roster, Johnson said.

The Bees and Storm Chasers open the best-of-five championship series Tuesday and Wednesday nights in Omaha. After a travel day, Game 3 is scheduled Friday night at Spring Mobile Ballpark.

Tickets for the series can be purchased at slbees.com, at the stadium box office or by calling 801-325-2337. Tickets will be sold only for games guaranteed to be played. —
