Investigators say Thai Le was holding his and his live-in girlfriend's toddler when the woman allegedly stabbed him the back.

Thu Huong Thi Nguyen, 41, was charged Tuesday with first-degree felony murder.

The charges, filed in 3rd District Court, also include obstructing justice, which is a second-degree felony, as well as commission of domestic violence in the presence of a child, a third-degree felony.

On Sept. 2, Nguyen and Le, 44, were at a Labor Day barbecue near 1800 W. Parkway Blvd. (2495 South) in West Valley City when the two got into an argument, according to the charges. About 10:30 p.m., Nguyen retrieved a knife from the kitchen and stabbed Le in the back, the charges add.

Le was holding his and Nguyen's child during the incident, according to the charges.

Officers responding to a 911 call learned the victim had been loaded into a van by friends and taken to Pioneer Valley Hospital, where he died.

The knife Nguyen allegedly used was found in a kitchen drawer and appeared to have been washed, according to the charges.

WVCPD Sgt. Jason Hauer has said that "several people were at the apartment for a Labor Day barbecue and had been drinking through the day and into the night."
