Logan • Officials at the Cache Humane Society in Logan say they have euthanized all 30 cats at the shelter after an outbreak of a highly contagious and fatal virus.

Shelter officials announced the mass euthanasia on Wednesday, saying it was a tragic but standard step to controlling the disease known as feline calicivirus.

The humane society says the virus was apparently brought in by a cat that was surrendered by its owner or impounded by animal control.

The shelter is now undergoing a 10-day process of disinfecting the building and will not be taking new cats or kittens during this period.

Feline calicivirus only affects cats. Symptoms include fever, sneezing, inflammation of the mouth, acute arthritis and pneumonia. Shelter officials say it often leads to an agonizing death.
