An 11-month-old girl remained hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday after she was shaken by her mother's boyfriend.

The girl's 20-year-old mother and the mother's boyfriend, a 25-year-old Layton man, brought her to the Davis Hospital Tuesday morning. She was later transfer to Primary Children's Medical Center. Doctors said she had life-threatening injuries consistent with "shaken baby syndrome."

Wednesday morning, Layton Lt. Shawn Horton said the girl was still alive and in critical condition.

Layton detectives determined that the mother's boyfriend was at home with the baby when the injuries occurred. The mother was at work. Through a combination of evidence and statements from the man, detectives determined he had become frustrated with the baby's crying, shook her and threw her on the bed. The man then left the home with the baby, picked up his girlfriend at work and they went to the hospital.

Horton called the incident "tragic."

"Its' just too bad he couldn't walk away and get some help," Horton added.

Police arrested the man and booked him into the Davis County Jail.
