Westminster College aviation students now can qualify for a restricted airline transport pilot certificate with fewer flying hours.

Aspiring pilots usually need 1,500 hours of flight experience. Under new authority from the Federal Aviation Administration, Westminster students can qualify with 1,000 hours.

The savings in flight time could allow students to qualify for the certificate one or two years earlier than students in other programs.
