State colleges: Alexa Gray leads BYU volley..

Provo • Alexa Gray smashed a team-high 17 kills to lead the BYU women's volleyball team to a 25-16, 25-18, 25-20 victory over UC Irvine aat Smith Fieldhouse on Thursday night.

Tambre Haddock tallied 11 kills and 12 digs, and Camry Godfrey had 40 assists for the Cougars (6-3), who outhit UC Irvine (5-2) .227 to .127.

"A win is a win and we're excited about that," BYU coach Shawn Olmstead said. "I thought UC Irvine did a nice job of adjusting in sets one and two when we had nice leads. Our ball control wasn't where it should have been and we didn't get our middles as involved as I would have liked to. But overall, I thought we played a good match."

BYU next plays Utah at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Deseret First Dual at the Huntsman Center.

Men's tennis

BYU players Andrey Goryachkov and Nikki Rae each won Round of 16 singles matches Thursday at the Utah Fall Tennis Class in Provo.

Goryachkov won his match, 6-0, 6-1; and Rae prevailed 6-3, 6-1. Utah's Cameron Lee and Matt Cowley each won Round 16 matches as well. Lee won, 6-3, and Cowley advanced by winning 7-5, 6-4.

Although the tournament includes college players, participants don't compete as a member of their schools, but rather as individuals.

It continues Friday and Saturday in Provo.
