Friday movie roundup: A creepy Friday the 13th

Not much brewing in the movie world on this Friday the 13th.

Since it is Friday the 13th, Hollywood serves up a horror movie: "Insidious: Chapter 2," the follow-up to the 2010 haunted-house thriller. Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne return as Josh and Renai Lambert, dealing with the aftermath of the ghost-busting escapades of the last movie – which ended with the death of ghost chaser Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye). But, we soon learn, something evil came back from the nether realm with Josh, and Renai must again enlist Elise's crew to combat the demons. Director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell (who reprises his role as one of Elise's aides) set up some creepy sequences, but it helps to have seen the first movie.

Also opening wide is "The Family," a dark comedy about a mob clan – led by Robert DeNiro and Michelle Pfeiffer – living in Bordeaux, France, under witness protection. The Cricket's colleague Scott D. Pierce was less than impressed.

The one new entry on the art-house slate is the Sundance Film Festival hit "Ain't Them Bodies Saints," a rustic-looking drama about married criminals (Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara) dealing with the aftermath when he's in prison and she's raising their baby daughter. Writer-director David Lowery sets an evocative tone, if slightly slow pacing.

Also starting, for one week at the Broadway, is the annual tour of the Global Film Initiative, which features 10 independent movies from the developing world.
