Mike Leavitt?

I just read "Matheson and Leavitt to serve as Count My Vote co-chairs" (Tribune, Sept. 13). That Mike Leavitt would take the lead in an organization supposedly out to enhance the power of the American voter is utterly horrifying.

Has everyone forgotten Leavitt's attempts, as governor in the 1990s, to convene a Conference of States with the express purpose of rewriting the U.S. Constitution? That whole effort called on state legislatures to appoint participants in a Conference of States with the authority to act as a new Constitutional Convention, and many did. Leavitt's plan ultimately failed, but that doesn't negate what he tried to do.

Leavitt and his ilk have no place in any kind of voter empowerment effort.
