Cottonwood Heights • Heavy rain hours before the game softened Brighton's grass field, making the top inch soft and muddy.
Maybe the Bengals should hope for rain more often.
The conditions were perfect for Brighton's pummeling run attack, which helped ring up a 31-3 Homecoming win over Cottonwood on Friday night. The Bengals' big line created holes for running back Osa Masina and fullback Josh Thompson, who were as slick and slippery as the turf.
The Colts had no answer for the Masina-Thompson combo, who together ran for more than 200 yards and four touchdowns in the rout.
"It was just our O-line; those guys were doing work up there," said Masina, a junior who sports 10 Division-I football offers. "The mud only helped our game. It made it easier and easier to run and push those D-linemen back."
Missed tackles were a theme for both teams, but only Cottonwood paid the price for an inability to wrap up.
It didn't take long for Brighton to find some explosive plays on its first possession. After Masina carried the Bengals into Cottonwood's half, Thompson burst up the middle for a 24-yard run.
After the Colts managed a short field goal, Masina again brought Brighton into the red zone.
The Bengals drove by making positive yards out of screens and finding seams in Cottonwood's run defense. Masina dived in from a yard out to take a 14-3 lead.
Masina and Thompson each added a score in the second half, and Hunter Dall booted a 40-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to ensure the big victory.
The Bengals have begun the season 4-0 for the second year in a row. But coach Ryan Bullett said his squad remembers how it faded last year and is determined to carry the success into region.
"Our guys know we have to get better for region," he said. "We have a lot of guys back who've worked really hard over the summer and who know what's at stake."
The Colts got a big first half out of running back Malu Hosea, who was a tackle-breaking machine. But Cottonwood never got closer to the end zone than it did near the end of the first half. The Colts fumbled at the Brighton 4-yard line on fourth down to spoil the possession.
Cottonwood also was plagued by miscues, giving up several fumbles and failing to convert on fourth down.
