Robert Redford delivered a message Monday night to the next generation of activists: "Use your voice" to make a difference.

Redford delivered the keynote speech at Equality Utah's Allies Dinner, a gala fund-raiser for the LGBT-rights group that drew more than 2,000 supporters Monday night at the Salt Palace.

According to a report in Forbes.com, the actor-director-activist called discrimination in any form "un-American," as he touted the work done by the Utah-based Sundance Institute in championing the work of LGBT filmmakers.

He told the assembled crowd that Utah activists can have a national impact. "If we change discriminatory laws in Utah, it sets a benchmark for people in other states; it allows people to see what can be done," Redford said.

Redford further observed that "Utah is changing. There are good people in Utah. More people want to change the discriminatory laws than want to keep them. People should be able to marry whomever they love."
