Letter: SL Valley too fragile for GOP machine

The Wasatch Front's natural temperature inversions often trap toxic elements that create the worst air pollution in the nation. Because of these extraordinary natural limitations, northern Utah was never meant for a steel mill, a smelter or an oil refinery. Neither was it meant for Hummers, 5,000-square-foot houses, excessive population, or two toxic waste dumps. This exquisite natural setting has enormous limitations that require intelligent, disciplined stewardship.

Like Dr. King, I also have a dream that some day Utahns will earn the right to live in this amazing wonderland, where its toxic industries are gone, families limit themselves to two children, public transit use surpasses automobiles, every roof has solar collectors, alternate energy replaces fossil fuels, a Democratic legislature provides intelligent gun laws, billboards no longer line the freeways, and public education is well-funded and teachers are paid well.

This could actually happen except for the Republican nightmare that includes filthy fog from fossil fuels, a starved public education system, attacks on the environment, a multimillion-dollar kickback, and gun addicts with assault weapons.

Clearly, Utah was never meant for a corrupt Republican machine that insists everything is for sale in exchange for campaign donations.
