Another fine article by Peggy Fletcher Stack ("Mormons join Hawaii's gay marriage fight, but with a new approach" (Tribune, Sept. 18). I wonder why the church feels it is important to lobby for religious liberty in the proposed legislation on same-sex marriage in Hawaii.
Doesn't the First Amendment's "free exercise of religion" guarantee protect the churches? Can you imagine the government of Hawaii or anywhere else in the United States requiring the Roman Catholic, Southern Baptist, or the LDS Church to conduct same-sex marriages?
