Utah fire captain arrested for alleged DUI

Weber Fire District Captain Joseph Gannon is on paid leave pending the outcome of a criminal investigation.

Ogden police arrested Gannon, 45, on Aug. 21 on suspicion of causing an injury accident while driving under the influence and booked him into Weber County Jail. He was released the same day.

"It is very unfortunate," said Weber Fire District Chief David Austin on Tuesday. "Joe is a very good officer with the district. He is well respected by his peers and serves the public really well."

After the accident, Gannon immediately called his department to tell them about the situation, after which he was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, Austin said. The fire department is in talks with their attorneys and wants to make sure they have all the information before making a decision, Austin added.

Gannon started with the Weber Fire District in 2006.

As of Tuesday, Gannon had not been charged.

In 1995, Gannon pleaded guilty to a class B misdemeanor in 2nd District Court in Layton. He was placed on probation for 12 months and ordered to pay a $700 fine, and complete 64 hours of community service and an alcohol treatment program, according to a search of court records.

Gannon could not be immediately reached for comment.
