Hunter found after disappears during bad weather in Cache County

A hunter temporarily disappeared in Cache County on Wednesday while looking for deer on the first day of the muzzleloader hunt.

The 55-year-old man was hunting with his son and a friend near the top of Providence Canyon when he became separated from the group, according to Cache County Chief Deputy Brad Slater. Authorities learned of the missing man about 1:30 p.m. and deployed search and rescue a half an hour later.

Search and rescue crews located the man about 4 p.m. He was in good condition, Slater said.

Slater said the man disappeared in very cold, wet weather that saw snow down to about 6,000 feet.

"My guess is they went hunting the weather came in and he probably hunkered down to wait out the snow storm," Slater added.

He said the search area was located near Logan Peak and up the canyon from the town of Providence.

The man's name had not been released early Wednesday afternoon.

Just about the time the search for the missing hunter wrapped up, Cache County officials got word of a second missing person.

Information was minimal, but Slater said initial reports indicated a 72-year-old man was missing near Curtis Creek, at the southeast end of the county near the Monte Cristo area.
