A Layton man has been charged with child abuse homicide in his girlfriend's baby's death.

In charges filed Wednesday, police wrote Tyler Ryan Geary, 25, admitted to shaking Aliyah Wild on Sept. 10 for 30 to 40 seconds "to get her to stop crying."

Geary then dropped Wild, 11 months, onto the bed, police wrote. She was unconscious. Geary again shook Wild, but she was unresponsive, police wrote.

Wild was taken to a hospital, where she was diagnosed with severe intracranial bleeding that caused swelling on her brain, police wrote. Doctors performed emergency surgery to remove part of her skull to reduce pressure on her brain, but her condition deteriorated. She was taken off life support and died Sept. 17.

An autopsy revealed brain injuries consistent with the trauma of being shaken and dropped as Geary described, police wrote.
