Being West Valley City mayor is more involved than candidate Ron Bigelow had thought.
Bigelow during a meeting with the Salt Lake Tribune editorial board on Monday described the mayor as having a voting role in the city only to break a tie of the City Council which actually is not the case.
Under the West Valley City form of government, the mayor is one of seven council members and votes on every issue, along with the other members. The mayor also runs council meetings and performs ceremonial functions while the city manager runs the city's day-to-day affairs.
Bigelow, who faces Karen Lang in the Nov. 5 election said he had been operating under the misconception about only participating in tie-breaking votes for about a month based on information from "a very good source."
Now that he's learned that he was mistaken, he says he's glad to have his votes officially recorded and had intended all along to make his stands known on each issue regardless.
