Family members cleaning out the Salt Lake City home of a deceased relative found more than memories; they uncovered an old military mortar shell.
Salt Lake City police Detective Rick Wall said the department's bomb squad determined the round from a World War II era mortar a portable, muzzleloading cannon used to fire short-range shells at high trajectories was not active, and thus not a danger.
However, police still confiscated the shell from the home at 450 N. Chaz Court about 4 p.m. Monday.
Wall said the shell will be stored in a safe police facility pending a decision on what to do with it.
