Utah's 'Eat Local' week begins Saturday

Food • Event includes food truck party, cooking demonstrations and movie screenings

Utah's 2013 "Eat Local" celebration, designed to increase awareness about eating foods that are made within a 250 miles of your home, kicks off this week.

Take the eat local pledge or participate in one of the following events. For more information or to purchase tickets visit the Slow Food Utah webiste at slowfoodutah.org/eat-local-challenge/.

Saturday • Farm to Street cook-off party featuring area food trucks. Granary Row, 336 W. 700 South; 5 to 8 p.m. Free admission but bring money to purchase food tickets to taste and vote for your favorite.

Sunday • Cooking workshop; Learn to make bread and fresh corn tortillas. Rico Warehouse, 545 W. 700 South, Salt Lake City; 4 to 7 p.m. $10. Advance registration required.

Sunday • Stone Soup demonstration using local produce. People's Market, 1000 S. 900 West, Salt Lake City.

Monday • Screenings of "A Changing Harvest" & "GMO OMG!" Brewvies, 677 S. 200 West, Salt Lake City. Doors open at 6 p.m.; screening at 7 p.m.

Tuesday • Quick Pickle Workshop during the Harvest Market at Pioneer Park, 300 S. 300 West, Salt Lake City, 4:30 to 7 p.m. Purchase market vegetables and then take them to the information booth to turn them into quick refrigerator pickles Jars, supplies and equipment provided free.

Oct. 9 • "Is Food Diversity an Illusion?" Lecture by Phil Howard, 7 p.m. Location to be determined.

Oct. 10 • Celebrate the Bounty, the annual fund-raiser for Local First, takes place at the Union Pacific Depot, 400 W. South Temple, Salt Lake City. Tickets are $55 for food; or $65 for food and two complementary adult beverages.

Oct. 11 • Dinner in the Field, featuring food by local caterers, restaurants and farms. Mololo Gardens, 2722 N. 2200 West, Salt Lake City; 6:30 p.m. Tickets $35.

Oct. 12 • Tour Christiansen Farms and enjoy a pot luck lunch. Meet in Salt Lake City for trip to Vernon; 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more details or to reserve a spot email slowfood@xmission.com.

Oct. 12 • Farm-to-glass cocktail gala, Rico Warehouse, 545 W. 700 South, Salt Lake City; 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $45 in advance.
