SUV crashes into Murray canal; several in serious condition

A four-car accident sent one vehicle into a creek in Murray on Friday afternoon and left several people, including a baby, in serious condition.

The accident began at 4:19 p.m. when a 72-year-old man was driving his white SUV erratically near 4220 S. State Street, according to Unified Police spokesman Ken Hansen. The man rear-ended a red SUV, which spun around and hit a parked Nissan, then continued down the street. The white SUV then drove off the road and into Little Cottonwood Creek, Hansen said.

At some point, one of the vehicles also hit a red Chevrolet Impala, though investigators Friday night were still trying to figure out how that happened.

Hansen said the 72-year-old driver may suffer from a medical condition that contributed to the accident and caused him to drive erratically.

A 2-month-old baby boy and his parents were in the red SUV. Hansen said the baby and the father suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The mother was in fair condition Friday night.

The driver of the white SUV who caused the accident also was in serious condition Friday, Hansen said, probably in part because he was submerged in cold water.

Hansen said the water in the creek was about two feet deep and moving slowly.
