South Salt Lake man charged in fatal stabbing of neighbor

A South Salt Lake man has been charged with murder in the stabbing of his neighbor.

Bail was set at $1 million for 20-year-old Ansumana Jadama, described by police previously as a West African immigrant and charged Friday with first-degree murder and aggravated burglary in the Sept. 25 death of 48-year-old Rickey Magnuson.

Magnuson's male roommate told police that the two heard a knock at the door about 9:15 p.m, and when Magnuson answered, Jadama stepped into the apartment and thrust a knife into Magnuson's abdomen, leaving the blade inside him after it snapped off at the handle. Jadama then returned to his next-door apartment, where police — after obtaining a search warrant and forcing entry with police dogs and a Unified Police Department SWAT team — found a handle that matched the blade in Magnuson's wound, according to the probable-cause statement.

Magnuson was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died. Officers didn't gain entry to Jadama's apartment until about 2 a.m., according to neighbor Lela White, when she heard a countdown and then a "blast" that blew the door off the apartment. White said police didn't leave the scene until 9 a.m. Police said Jadama was taken into custody without incident.

Jadama's court history includes an arrest in June 2012 for kicking in the door of his sister's apartment and demanding money under threat of death, for which he pleaded guilty to domestic-violence-related burglary and criminal mischief. He received a 540-day jail term with all but seven days suspended.

He was due in court at the end of September to review his compliance with those conditions.
