Utah football: Tight end Jake Murphy to have surgery on wrist

Utah went into the season with two good experienced tight ends. Now the Utes could be down to none.

Jake Murphy, who ranks fifth on the team in catches (10) and fourth in receiving yards (179), will undergo surgery on Tuesday to repair a broken bone in his wrist, according to a tweet sent from his father, Dale Murphy.

"Shout out to my son Jake, Played the 2nd half vs UCLA in pain w broken wrist. Surgery tomorrow," the tweet read.

Murphy, a junior, had two catches for 27 yards in Utah's 34-27 loss to the Bruins.

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said Monday evening he won't know what the prognosis is for Murphy until Tuesday afternoon and will address the injury only if it is season-ending, as per his policy.

Utah's other tight end, senior Westlee Tonga, missed the UCLA game due to injury. He has two catches for 28 yards on the season.

Others who have played at tight end are freshman Siale Fakailoatonga, who has two catches for 18 yards, and JC transfer Greg Reese.
