Investigators are trying to learn what caused the death of a 37-year-old man whose body was found Monday in his South Salt Lake home while a small fire burned the contents of another room.

The man's girlfriend called dispatchers at 7 p.m. Monday to report that she found him dead inside the house, 362 E. Utopia Ave., said deputy South Salt Lake Fire Chief Kevin Bowman. When medics arrived, they opened the door to find smoke in the house. The man's body was in one basement room while the contents of another basement room were burning, Bowman said.

Firefighters put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher. Damage was minimal, Bowman said.

It isn't clear whether the fire had anything to do with the man's death, Bowman said. There was no obvious trauma on his body, and investigators found no indications of suicide, Bowman said. Relatives spoke with the man earlier Monday and reported no serious health problems.

Police were investigating the scene late Monday.
