Utah Highway Patrol troopers were trying to find a suspect vehicle after reports of gunfire came from Interstate 215 South near 700 West Thursday morning.

UHP Cpl. Todd Johnson said no injuries or damage was reported, but troopers had few other details to go on as of Thursday afternoon.

However, troopers and area police were looking for a green GMC Yukon SUV "which may have been involved," Johnson said.

A motorist told troopers that the suspect vehicle drove by him going westbound at about 8:30 a.m., and a passenger pointed a firearm out the window of the vehicle and fired five or six shots up into the air.

Because the motorist could see a barrel sticking out of the vehicle, he believed the firearm was a rifle of some sort. And because the shots were fired in quick succession, the motorist believed it was a semi-automatic.

Johnson added that the weapon did not appear to have been aimed at the motorist and that none of the shots hit him or his vehicle.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call UHP dispatchers at 801-887-3800.
