A 59-year-old Cedar City man was still in critical condition on Friday, two days after allegedly being beaten and kicked nearly to death by a male acquaintance.

Cedar City police Sgt. Jimmy Roden said Bryan Mahue Mellor was on life support at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas. Mellor was flown there after police found him bloodied and unconscious on a sidewalk outside an apartment complex at 468 S. 75 West Wednesday night.

Brandon Sappington, 30, was being held without bail in the Iron County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, assault on a police officer, interference with arrest and an unrelated misdemeanor traffic warrant.

The motive for the alleged assault was still the subject of an ongoing investigation, Roden said.
