Kearns man gets probation for running over teen

A 19-year-old man who critically injured a 17-year-old boy after running over him with his car in a fight outside a party in Kearns was sentenced Friday to spend three years on probation and pay restitution to the victim and his family.

Angelo Ginori, 19, pleaded guilty in June to a second-degree felony count of aggravated assault, punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

But on Friday, 3rd District Judge Vernice Trease ordered Ginori instead to complete probation, during which time he must obtain a high school diploma, work, stay out of trouble with the law and submit to random drug and alcohol tests.

Ginori was also ordered to pay a $1,000 fine or serve 150 hours of community service, in addition to paying restitution to the victim's family.

According to charging documents, the 17-year-old victim had left a party about 3:45 a.m. with a group of friends on June 30, 2012, when an argument broke out inside the car.

The victim and Ginori, who was 18 at the time, got out of the car and began to fight.

Ginori's girlfriend allegedly came outside to separate the two teenagers, and Ginori got back into the car and took off.

He ran over the victim, who was lying on the lawn of a house near 5500 South and 4700 West.

Ginori made it as far as 4700 South 5800 West, where he rolled and crashed the car, police said.

He fled on foot to the area of Hunter High School, where law enforcement officers found him.

His probation was ordered effective immediately.
