Sports briefs: Djokovic beats Del Potro for Shanghai title

tennis • Novak Djokovic maintained his dominance in China by holding off Juan Martin del Potro 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (3) on Sunday to capture a second Shanghai Masters title and extend his winning streak in the country to 20 matches. The Serb completed a back-to-back sweep of titles at the China Open in Beijing and the Shanghai Masters for the second straight year.

Kenyans dominate Chicago Marathon

runNing • Dennis Kimetto of Kenya broke the course record in capturing the Chicago Marathon, and compatriot Rita Jeptoo was the women's winner in the first major marathon in the United States since the Boston bombings. Kimetto finished in 2 hours, 3 minutes, 45 seconds, leading a 1-2-3 finish for Kenyan men. He beat the mark of 2:04:38 set by Ethiopia's Tsegaye Kebede last year. Emmanuel Mutai (2:03:52) finished second, and Sammy Kitwara (2:05:16) was third.

Jeptoo won in 2:19:57. Jemima Sumgong Jelegat of Kenya (2:20:48) was second, followed by Maria Konovalova of Russia (2:22:46).

Vettel victorious in Japanese Grand Prix

auto racing • Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel won the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka but will have to wait to seal a fourth straight Formula One title as nearest rival Fernando Alonso finished fourth.

USA Luge crowns national champions

winter sports • Chris Mazdzer, Kate Hansen and the doubles team of Jacob Hyrns and Andrew Sherk captured titles at USA Luge's national championships in Lake Placid, N.Y. Mazdzer finished two runs in 1 minute, 46.498 seconds on the track at Mount Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid, N.Y., posting the two best times of the men's competition. Tucker West (1:46.612) was second, and Taylor Morris (1:46.922) took third.

Hansen finished in 1:30.136 to beat veteran Julia Clukey's time of 1:30.326. Former world champion Erin Hamlin was third in 1:30.386.
