Short of making a trip to the Holy Land, there may not be a better way to see the sights of Jerusalem than a new 3-D documentary opening Friday at Thanksgiving Point's Mammoth Screen Theater.

The film, "Jerusalem," aims to explain the historical and religious importance of the ancient city by telling the stories of three families — one Jewish, one Christian, one Muslim — who live there. The film also follows Dr. Jodi Magness, the renowned archaeologist, as she goes underground to solve the city's mysteries. The film also goes far above ground, as filmmakers were given permission to fly in the region's strict no-fly zone to capture the first ever large-format aerial images of the Old City.

The movie is narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch ("The Fifth Estate," "Star Trek Into Darkness"), and written and directed by Daniel Ferguson. The director of photography is Reed Smoot, a Utah native and veteran large-format cinematographer.

The movie debuts Friday at the Mammoth Screen Theater at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi. It will screen daily (except Sundays) at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
