Bountiful • Bonneville's Makenzie Price took the corner kick with authority Tuesday.
The Lakers took the field knowing that they had a lot to prove in a rematch of last year's Class 4A state title game.
As both teams collapse in the box fighting for position, multiple Lakers misfired on the ball, but junior Elsa Roundy wouldn't be denied.
She struck the ball with authority and found the back of the net for the game's lone goal in a 4A first-round playoff game. She was engulfed by her teammates after scoring only her second goal of the season.
"I was so hungry for that goal," Roundy said. "I just wanted to win. We fought through so much, and I wanted to do it for my team."
Roundy's effort proved to be the difference in Bonneville's 1-0 upset of the top seed from Region 6.
Bonneville out-muscled Bountiful with sharp footwork and an ability to pressure the ball the entire game.
"The energy level out there was crazy," Bonneville senior Brienna Tuck said. "They came out really intense and we had to match them step for step."
Bountiful had 10 shots on goal but Laker freshman goalkeeper Kyra McDowel wouldn't budge. She moved confidently between the posts but credited Tuck for serving as a lynch pin in the backfield, breaking up plays and clearing the ball out.
"We are so thankful to have her out there making big plays for us," McDowel said. "We're the bomb with Bri."
The Lakers defeated Bountiful 1-0 in last year's state title game, so they hope Tuesday's win is a good omen.
"I think we played good against a great team," Tuck said. "Providing we play our game and finish, nothing should be able to stop us."
