Weather the storm in style this season with eye-catching outerwear. From oversized and draped to military or moto inspired, or an updated classic, the latest in coat trends have got you covered.

Oversized coats

The season's biggest coat trend is literally big, with oversized proportions like exaggerated lapels and collars, dropped shoulders and generous sleeves. The extra volume makes it easy to layer over chunky knits and bulky sweaters. An oversized coat, however, should not be mistaken for a piece that doesn't fit. Oversized jackets should still have a shape to them, says Bailey Sullivan, visual merchandiser for Olive and Tweed in Park City. Don't be overwhelmed by volume; anything oversized on the top should be paired with something sleek and slimming on the bottom. For a more tailored look, choose a slimmer silhouette with an oversized detail such as extra-large lapels.

Parkas

Fall in line with the season's military-inspired looks. Khaki, olive, Army green and camo print parkas are best-sellers this season, said Sullivan. The luxe parka commands attention in various shades of green with rich accents like faux fur and gold hardware. For a grunge-meets-glam look, Diana Willardson, hairstylist and owner of Salon Shag in Sandy, pairs her camo parka with a sweater dress, tights and heels to feminize this usually masculine style. Look for styles that cinch and define the waist for the most flattering fit.

Cape coats

This time around, cape coats are casual and cozy as well as glamorous and sophisticated. Wrap up in blanket-inspired styles with bold patterns, plaids, stripes and Aztec prints. It's chic and easy; just toss one on and you're ready to go. For a dramatic evening look, try an elegant camel color or traditional black wool to wear with formal wear. Create your own coat-as-cape style by draping a jacket over your shoulders. Celebrities and trendsetters are forgoing the armholes and sleeves for an effortless half-on half-off look.

Moto jackets

The iconic motorcycle jacket gets a makeover. Still loaded with plenty of zippers, but bold colors and unexpected fabrics such as lace, brocade and tweed have replaced the traditional black leather. Classic and chic, the moto jacket can add edge to any outfit, but doesn't have to be paired with other rocker styles. Sullivan suggests softening the lines that motorcycle jackets are known for with a chiffon blouse, dress pants and heels.

Classics

The trench coat and peacoat are always fashionable and remain classics for a reason. A classic coat is the most versatile and can be worn dressed up or dressed down, says Sullivan. A blush pink trench coat with delicate laser-cut details complements a little black dress and ladylike heels, while a jewel-toned wool topper works just as well with jeans or leggings and flat riding boots for a laid-back look. To update a classic style, accessorize with scarves, gloves and hats. It is also an easy and safe way to bring in some other color if your wardrobe is more on the neutral side. "Not usually a huge fan of trends or not sure how to wear them?" asks Sullivan. "Come in and we will gladly help incorporate trends that will work with your style and existing wardrobe." —
