Draper • Two first-half goal on set plays and a steady rotation of fresh legs were enough for Juan Diego in a 3-1 victory against visiting Pine View in the first round of the Class 3A girls' soccer playoffs Wednesday afternoon.

The host Soaring Eagle (10-4-3) got goals from Ashley Buck, Kristen Shimkus and Claire Kolff to put away the pesky Panthers, who played without three senior starters, including leading scorer Kayla Hammond.

Buck scored on a free kick from 30 yards out in the 24th minute, and after Brilee Barrow evened the score for Pine View, Shimkus headed in a corner kick from Buck just before halftime.

"I was fired up because I was out for the goal that they scored," Shimkus said. "I don't like playing in a tie. It makes me uncomfortable. It was adrenaline. You want to go into the half up, so that's what did it for me."

Kolff cleaned up a loose ball in the 49th minute to cap the scoring and send Juan Diego to its seventh win in nine outings. The Region 10 champion Soaring Eagle will host Snow Canyon in the quarterfinals.

Pine View (8-8-1), the fifth-place team in Region 9, made just three substitutions the entire game. With Hammond (10 goals this season), Bailee Sorenson and Maddie Metzger all benched for what coach Sam Johnston called "disciplinary reasons," the Panthers hung tough in the second half but didn't have the legs in the end.

"I'm proud of what the girls did out there," Johnston said. "I looked out there and we had five and six freshmen playing, and they did a great job. It's disappointing, but it's balancing that with the excitement for the girls who played."

Buck's goal was her eighth goal in just her seventh game this season. She missed significant time because of a concussion, but she is back in time to help her teammates make a run at a state title. —
