Salt Lake City expands community garden program

Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker along with officials from Wasatch Community Gardens will announce the expansion of the city's community gardens program today at 11 a.m.

Eight new parcels of city-owned and managed land will become available at Cannon Greens Community Garden, 778 W. California Ave. (1300 South), according to a news release. The new parcels will expand the current two-garden Green City Growers program to 10 plots.

Residents are encouraged to review the available parcels on SLCgreen.com and, if interested, complete an application for the organization and creation of a community garden. Applications are due Dec. 1.

"Salt Lake City recognizes the important role community vegetable gardens play in supporting our local food system," Becker said in the release. "We are delighted to offer these parcels – two acres of previously idle land now dedicated to community agriculture."
